Mv Breaded A

To the Office of the President of Malta:

Dear Sir,

There have been reports today of a ship, the Mv Breaded A, sailing to
the Gaddafi held port of Zawiya under the flag of Malta.

It has been reported that this ship's port of origin is: Thdori, Greece.

Are the authorities of Malta aware of this ship and its cargo potentially being intended to support the Gadaffi regime in breach of Resolution 1970.

Regards,

Gary Elshaw

CC: United Nations High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Thank you very much for sending me more information about the eye-witness who appeared on Al Jazeera who saw the ship in Tripoli. I fully understand why the Greek Foreign Ministry might be alarmed to discover one of its ships in the port of Tripoli in contravention of United Nations Resolution 1970.

I do have a number of questions regarding the announcement:

  1.  Which relevant Greek authorities inquired about this information?
  2.  Does Greece have diplomats actively monitoring the harbours in both Tripoli and Tobruk?
  3.  Did the Greek authorities attempt to contact the eye-witness who saw the ship?
  4. Although the Greek Foreign Ministry asserts no information at this time has been found to confirm the claim, will the authorities continue to try and ascertain the origin of this ship and categorically deny the claim?
  5.  In light of the captured fuel ship, the ‘Anwaar Afriqya,’  yesterday, that is said to have originated in Greece, are the authorities also investigating this ship's origin?

As an aside, deontological ethics are important, as important as “competent” authorities, however, it is disingenuous to believe a television station can cross-check a claim when the interview subject is speaking live to air.

Regards,

Gary Elshaw

To The Prime Minister of Greece, The Head of Mission for Greece to New Zealand, Members of the International Monetary Fund, The President of the European Union and Members of the United Nations Security Council.

I am writing to you to express my deep concern for reports that have emerged in the last few hours of a Greek ship unloading weapons in the Libyan capital of Tripoli. The eyewitness has reported that a ship sailing under the flag of Greece has been unloading these weapons in the port for three days.

I am outraged that a member of the European Union, an organisation that has an arms embargo against the Ghadaffi regime, has allowed by consent or omission, to have arms supplied to one of the worst dictators in the world, a man who has committed countless atrocities against his own people and citizens of other nation states.

I am also appalled that the nation that represents the foundations of democracy could be undermining the greatest fight for democracy in the middle east in my lifetime.

I ask for a full investigation into these reports by the European Union, the United Nations and the state of Greece.

The state of Greece has recently received significant financial aid and support from both the European Union and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). If the state of Greece is found to have knowingly supplied arms to the Ghaddafi regime, I request the IMF and the European Union consider whether a member state should receive the considerable support that other member states are entitled to.

Regards,

Gary Elshaw

NEW ZEALANDERS URGED TO JOIN RALLY FOR LIBYANS

Libyan New Zealanders will be taking to the streets of Wellington tomorrow in support of relatives and friends protesting against Muammar Gaddafi’s 42-year dictatorship of their country.

They are urging other New Zealanders to join them.

“This is about human rights, basic human rights and dignity,” Newtown businessman  and Libyan, Baha Mabruk said today. “Libyans have been denied a free voice for 42 years and they have had enough – they have found their voice,”

Libyan-New Zealander Yasmine El Orfi, of Wellington, said it was a disgrace that unarmed people marching peacefully were being shot and killed - many from aircraft.

“It seems that Gadaffi’s regime will stop at nothing to prevent the Libyan people reclaim their country and their dignity. The rest of the world has to condemn these brutal acts of violence and urgently step in to stop it. If we say nothing – we support it.”

The Rally for Libya will take place in Midland Park, 12pm Wednesday 23 February.
